JK Literacy Week

Literacy Week was "Lit", as the big kids might say! Beginning with a teacher swap, Junior Kindergarten was very excited to welcome Mrs Megan Hutchison into the classroom for a very special round of storybook fingerplay songs and rhymes. During this time, I (Mrs. Lavallee) popped into Mrs. Hutchison's grade two class to read aloud.

Throughout the JK week families sent in short notes about their heritage. The kids would later share these stories with the group and then paste them into crafted booklets. These booklets were a Monday to Thursday project where kids learned that a book cover is a sneak into what the story inside involves, and the cover tells us who wrote the book and/or who drew the pictures inside. The JK kids became authors and illustrators of their own booklets after drawing fun pictures inside and then dictating stories to adults who captured their words in print. On Thursday, each booklet was read aloud to the whole group.

We started the week with a teacher swap and ended the week with a book swap! Families sent gently used books to school last week, and on Wednesday and Thursday these books were put on display. Children were welcomed to shop and swap, leaving the books they'd brought for others to enjoy, while they picked a few 'new' books for home.

Happy Reading!
