In September, Grade 2 students in Alberta underwent literacy screenings for the Alberta Government and PWPSD. After scoring the screeners, Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Hutchison collaborated with PWPSD Literacy Coordinator Rowena Stewart to plan the next steps. In Grade 2, there is a diverse range of students, from those mastering letter sounds to those reading above their grade level.
The data revealed specific areas where students needed support. Some required assistance with blending or recognizing ending sounds in words, while others could benefit from additional support in sentence writing. To address these needs, Literacy EA Mrs. Bernie-Brown and Educational Assistants Mrs. Hanna and Mrs. Marcoux joined the effort. They divided the 38 Grade 2 students into 5 groups, providing 30 minutes of small group literacy instruction each day.
